A Brief Report on Bilateral Relations between the Republic of Armenia and the Arab Republic of Egypt.

On September 12-15, Foreign Minister Zohrab Mnatsakanyan will pay an official visit to the Arab Republic of Egypt.

The relations between Armenia and Egypt are anchored on centuries-old friendship, historical and cultural commonalities, and mutual trust. Being the first Arab country to recognize Armenia's independence, Egypt in 1992 became the first destination of the Armenian diplomatic presence in the Middle East.

There is a traditional high-level political dialogue between the two countries. The contacts between the Foreign Ministers of the two countries on various international platforms are constant. In February, 2020 regular Armenian-Egyptian political consultations were held in Cairo.

Armenia and Egypt effectively cooperate on multilateral platforms as well.

Close cooperation is developed in the spheres of education, culture, trade, economy, tourism, healthcare, and a number of other spheres.

There are Armenian-Egyptian friendship groups in the Parliaments of the two countries.

Trade-Economic Cooperation

Two countries have a joint Armenian-Egyptian Intergovernmental Commission on Economic, Scientific and Technical Cooperation, which has held 5 sessions so far.

In 2019 bilateral trade turnover amounted to $ 5.8 million.

In 2017, the Hurghada-Yerevan and Sharm el-Sheikh-Yerevan regular direct flights of the Egyptian Air Cairo airline were launched. Egypt is one of the favorite destinations for Armenian tourists.

Scientific-Educational and Cultural Cooperation


Since independence, about 2,000 Armenian professionals in various fields have participated in programs organized by the Egyptian Development Partnership Agency in Cairo. Students of the Armenian universities at Cairo University participate in annual courses of Arabic language. In 2007, the Center for Armenian Studies was established at Cairo University.

Cultural events are regularly organized: cultural days of Armenia and Egypt are being held in both countries, respectively.

Legal Field

More than 50 documents of cooperation have been signed between Armenia and Egypt in the spheres of investment promotion, science, education, culture, healthcare, exclusion of double taxation, trade, customs, air communication, legal, agricultural, economic cooperation, as well as in other spheres.

Armenian community

The Armenian community has made a significant contribution to the formation and strengthening of the Armenian-Egyptian official relations. The latter is one of the traditional cradles of the Armenian presence in the Middle East with a centuries of history. The number of the Armenian community in Egypt has increased dramatically when more than a century ago hundreds of thousands of our compatriots who survived the Armenian Genocide found shleters there.

The Armenian community of Egypt has made a serious contribution to the establishment and development of the statehood of modern Egypt, occupying influential state and public positions.

The Armenian community of Egypt has the potential to preserve its national identity, language and religion. There are operating churches, schools, cultural, and sports clubs; newspapers and magazines are published. Currently, about ten thousand Armenians live in Egypt, who are mainly residing in the cities of Cairo and Alexandria.
