Foreign Minister of Armenia Edward Nalbandian pays an official visit to Belarus

On November 27, Foreign Minister of Armenia Edward Nalbandian arrived in Minsk with a one-day official visit.
On the same day Edward Nalbandian was received by President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko.


In his welcoming remarks Belarusian President mentioned that the visit of Armenian Foreign Minister will give a new stimulus in relations between two friendly countries. By Belarusian President’s definition warm relations between the leaders of two countries mostly promote the friendship between Armenia and Belarus. President Lukashenko emphasized that all necessary prerequisites exist for further activation of bilateral relationship.
Minister Nalbandian delivered the greetings of Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan to Alexander Lukashenko. Edward Nalbandian underlined the high level of bilateral relationship and dynamically developing cooperation and stressed the importance to activate mutual visits, cooperation between Parliaments, local governmental bodies, cultural and scientific exchanges. Minister Nalbandian expressed hope that the session of Armenian-Belarusian intergovernmental commission to be held in the first quarter of 2009 will become a stimulus for progress in those directions.


At the meeting between Foreign Ministers of Armenia and Belarus Edward Nalbandian and Sergei Martynov a wide range of bilateral, regional and international issues was discussed.


The two mentioned the existence of legal base and at the same time stressed the necessity to broaden it for maintaining further deepening of partnership. Ministers attached importance to the visit of the delegation headed by Hovik Abrahamyan, Speaker of National Assembly of Armenia to Belarus in the first part of next year.


Sergei Martynov delivered the invitation of Belarusian Prime-Minister Sergey Sidorski to Armenian Prime-Minister Tigran Sargsyan to visit Minsk.
Ministers Nalbandian and Martynov underlined the growth of bilateral trade in recent years which today is approximately 30 million dollars and on the same time mentioned that the existing potential creates opportunities for expanding of its volumes. Ministers exchanged ideas on the ways to overcome the inequality between export and import.
Foreign Ministers of Armenia and Belarus discussed the opportunity to expand cooperation also in the cultural area and in that regard expressed satisfaction with arrangements on holding of Belarusian Cultural Days in Armenia in 2009 and Armenian Cultural Days in Belarus in 2010.
On the request of Sergei Martynov Edward Nalbandian presented recent developments in Artsakh (Nagorno Karabakh) peace process.
The meeting between Foreign Ministers of Armenia and Belarus was followed by joint press conference and afterwards Armenian Foreign Minister gave an interview to Belarusian TV.


The discussions between Ministers continued in the evening at an official dinner hosted by Sergei Martynov in honour of Edward Nalbandian.
Within the visit Edward Nalbandian also visited Minsk Square of Victory. After the check-up of the guard of honour and performance of national anthems of Armenia and Belarus by military orchestra Minister Nalbandian laid a wreath on Victory Monument of Great Patriotic War.


In Minsk Armenian Foreign Minister also met with the representatives of Armenian community in Belarus. In the course of the meeting Edward Nalbandian presented the perspectives of development of Armenian-Belarusian relations, opportunities of settlement of Artsakh (Nagorno Karabakh) issue and normalization of Armenian-Turkish relations. Minister Nalbandian answered the questions of Belarusian Armenian community’s concern.


On November 28, Edward Nalbandian returned Yerevan.
