Resolution on the «Universal realization of the right of peoples to self-determination» was adopted at the UN General Assembly
19 December, 2009On December 18, resolution on “Universal realization of the right of peoples to self-determination” was adopted without a vote at the 64th session of the UN General Assembly in New York.
More than 50 UN member states, including Armenia and Azerbaijan, became co-authors of the document.
The abovementioned UN document reiterates the universal realization of the right of peoples to self-determination and calls on the countries to pay a special attention to the cases of violation of that right.
Many member states of the Organization believe that right to self-determination is one of the basic principles of international law; it is actual within the context of current international situation and is considered to be one of the most important cornerstones of the whole international system.
