Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandian had a meeting with the Speaker of the Uruguayan Parliament

On November 15 Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandian met with Jorge Orrico, the Speaker of the Uruguayan Parliament, who is in Armenia on an official visit.
Welcoming the guest, Minister Nalbandian mentioned with satisfaction that despite the fact that there are thousands of kilometers between the two countries, Armenia and Uruguay are close countries, united by strong friendship and commitment to universal values.

“The Armenian people has the warmest feelings towards Uruguay, which in 1965 was the first country recognizing the Armenian Genocide. Today You are the first foreign high-ranking official to visit Nagorno-Karabakh Republic (Artsakh). We particularly welcome You for this step, which is worth to have a special assessment,” said the Armenian Minister of Foreign Affairs.

The Speaker of the Uruguayan Parliament expressed gratitude for the warm reception and stressed that Uruguay strongly praises and stresses the importance of the friendship with Armenia and Armenian people. Jorge Orrico noted that the Armenians with their culture, work and achievements had an important contribution to the development of Uruguay.

“We are a small country and we are committed to the principles of international law. Uruguay will do everything to maintain international peace and push the right of the Armenian people to the self-determination,” underlined the Speaker of the Uruguayan Parliament.

The sides touched upon the steps to be undertaken towards the expanding of bilateral cooperation in various spheres. In this context the high-ranking reciprocal visits, inter-parliamentary cooperation, expanding of existing legal framework between the two countries and deepening of trade and economic ties were particularly stressed.

Minister Nalbandian presented the guest the efforts undertaken by Armenia and international community towards the peaceful settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh issue.
