Minister of Foreign Affairs of Armenia met the Secretary-General of the United Nations

On September 28 Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandian who participates in the 68th Session on UN General Assembly met Ban Ki-moon, the Secretary-General of the UN.

Greeting the guest the Secretary-General of the UN highly appreciated the active involvement Armenian diplomacy in international multilateral processes.

During the meeting the sides had an exchange of ideas about the Syrian crisis and the flow of refugees as a result of the conflict. Edward Nalbandian noted that Armenia has hosted around ten thousand Syrian-Armenians on the other hand their greater part which is an indispensible part of the Syrian people still lives in condition of crisis.

Minister of Foreign Affairs of Armenia and the Secretary General of the UN welcomed the unanimous adoption of the Resolution on Syria’s chemical weapons at the Security Council on September 27. The sides also stressed the importance of furthering the efforts toward political settlement of the conflict.

Edward Nalbandian and Ban Ki-moon also turned to the negotiation process of Nagorno-Karabakh issue. Minister Nalbandian presented the efforts taken by Armenia and the international community for the peaceful resolution of the conflict.

In the context of the Armenian Chairmanship in the Council of Europe Minister Nalbandian mentioned that the UN and the Council of Europe are core partners in the areas of human rights, protection of fundamental freedoms, struggle against hatred and xenophobia, which are among the priorities of the Armenian Chairmanship in that European institution.

Turning to the reform process of the UN Edward Nalbandian noted that Armenia supports enhancement of institutional capacities of the UN.

“We support the reform process of the UN and we are ready to have our contribution to that work.

We believe that reforms give an opportunity to raise the role of the organization in finding solutions to pivotal issues facing the international community,”- stressed Minister of Foreign Affairs of Armenia.
