Launch of events dedicated to Centennial of Armenian Genocide in Uruguay

On March 11, presentation of the book, entitled “Genocide of Armenian Culture” by legist, human rights advocate Oscar Lopez Goldaracena took place at the “Florentino” hall of “Santos” building of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Uruguay, in cooperation with the Embassy of Armenia in Uruguay.

Minister of Foreign Affairs of Uruguay Rodolfo Nin Novoa, Minister of Education and Culture María Julia Muñoz, Rector of Uruguay University Roberto Markarian, Senators Rafael Michelini and Ruben Martinez, diplomats, representatives academicians, NGOs, Montevideo City Hall, Uruguay Armenian Structures, human rights activists.

In his remarks, Foreign Minister of Uruguay reflected on cultural heritage and conditions, as expression of national identity, as well as norms of the international law, that regulate those fields.

In his remarks, author of the book, legist Oscar Lopez Goldaracena touched upon the history of the Armenian Genocide, plan of Young Turks Government to commit the crime. He also read and cited British historian and culture expert Arnold Toynbee.

The author also reflected on genocide of culture, as separate event, despite the fact that genocide of culture takes place together with annihilation of the people or not. According to the author, genocide of culture could be committed without annihilation. One century after the Armenian Genocide – genocide of culture is underway. Cultural monuments and memorials are being destructed in order to exterminate existence of the people and its trace on given area.

Representatives of Uruguay Armenian Community, scholars, public figures and politicians delivered speeches at the event.
