Events dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide in Târgu Mureș and Cluj-Napoca, Romania

From April 7 through April 9, set of scientifico-cultural events, dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide and history of Armenian community of Transylvania were held in the Romanian cities of Târgu Mureș and Cluj-Napoca.

On April 7, symposium, entitled “Armenian culture and civilization. Historic interaction” was organized by Petru Maior University of Târgu Mureș, local Hungarian Armenian Cultural Union and “George Shinkay” Research Institute of Romanian Academy and Hungarian Cultural Union. On April 8-9 set of events, entitled “Guidance of the Armenian Culture”, was organized in cooperation with Institute of the Armenian Studies of Babes-Bolyai University, Embassy of Armenia in Romania and Armenian Union of Romania at the Cluj National Museum of Art.

Key topic of the event was the Armenian Genocide. President of "Modus Vivendi" Center for Social Science Ara Papian and visiting scholar, Dr. Prof. of Babes-Bolyai University, as well as Universities in Israel and other states Michael Shafer reported on the Holocaust and the Armenian Genocide at the symposium. Researchers from Universities of Târgu Mureș and Cluj-Napoca delivered similar reports. Ambassador of Armenia to Romania Hamlet Gasparian, President of the Armenian Union of Romania Varuzhan Voskanyan, the head of Institute of the Armenian Studies of Babes-Bolyai University Luciano Nastase-Kovács delivered speeches in the context of current international and Armenian-Turkish relations, and, particularly, its political, economic, social and demographic consequences. Vice-President in charge of Cluj-Napoca County Council Istvan Vakar expressed full solidarity with the Armenian people and Armenia.

On April 8 in the evening, an exhibition of works by Transylvanian painter Miklós Yakobovich was organized at the Cluj National Museum of Art, “Flauto Dolce” ensemble performed musical selection of Armenian works, publications of “A Shameful Act: The Armenian Genocide and the Question of Turkish Responsibility” by Taner Akcam and “Ravished Armenia: The Story of Aurora Mardiganian” books in Romanian, “Book of whispers” by Varuzhan Voskanyan in Hungarian were presented, and based on the book “When the death is late” and “On the path of whispers” movies screened.

The events were widely covered in the Romanian media. On April 3, Romanian “TVR3” launched special project dedicated to the Armenian Genocide, kicked off with the interview with Ambassador Hamlet Gasparian.
