The Senate of Canada reaffirmed recognition of the Armenian Genocide

On May 13th Ambassador of Armenia to Canada Armen Yeganian met with the newly-appointed Speaker of the Senate Leo Housakos and congratulated him upon his appointment.

Afterwards the Senate of Canada reaffirmed its recognition of the Armenian Genocide in the presence of representatives of the Embassy of Armenia and Armenian community.

The statement was brought forward by Senator Thanh Hai Ngo. In his remarks Senator referred to the Senate Resolution of 2002, House of Commons Motion of 2004 and Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s annual statements since 2006 that affirm Canada’s recognition of the Armenian Genocide. He also referred to the Motion adopted by the House of Commons of Canada last month, which not only reiterated Armenian Genocide recognition, but also designated April 24th as Armenian Genocide Remembrance Day.
