Inaugural meeting of special working group between Foreign Ministries of Armenia and Greece

On October 25, the inaugural meeting of the special working group between the Foreign Ministries of Armenia and Greece was held in Athens. The Armenian delegation was headed by Shahen Avakian, Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Armenia, and Ioannis Amanatidis, Deputy Foreign Minister of Greece, headed the Greek delegation. Fadey Charchoghlyan, Ambassador of Armenia to Greece also participated in the meeting.

Discussion of the ways to advance economic relations between the two countries was included in the agenda of the meeting. Both sides, while commending the close political relations between the two countries, agreed that they need to take effective steps to fully exploit the existing potential and to bring the economic relations to the same level.

Greeting the Armenian side, Deputy Foreign Minister Amanatidis emphasized that Greece is pursuing the promotion of bilateral relations with Armenia through the active collaboration in areas of mutual interest. He expressed hope that this special working group will contribute to the elaboration of perspective directions in the trade-economic sphere.

Expressing gratitude for the reception, the Secretary General Shahen Avakian highlighted the solid legal framework between the two countries in the economic sphere and presented the possible directions of enhancing the Armenian-Greek economic relations, including involvement of Greek companies in the free trade zones opening in Armenia, intensification of cooperation between Greece and EAEU via Armenia, the use of the potential provided within the framework of EU-Armenia relations (Horizon 2020, GSP +, COSME).

In the course of the meeting, the issues concerning the participation of Greek companies in the "Business Forum" to be held within the framework of the Summit of the International Organization of La Francophonie in Yerevan in 2018, as well as the issues related to the organization of the next session of Armenian-Greek Intergovernmental Commission on Economic, Industrial and Technological Cooperation were discussed.
