Meeting of the Foreign Ministers of Armenia and Greece

On December 13, Edward Nalbandian, Foreign Minister of Armenia and Nikos Kotzias, Foreign Minister of Greece, continued their talks launched the day before.


Throughout the meeting the sides touched upon the issues of further deepening of the political dialogue, strengthening of economic cooperation, expanding bilateral trade and economic relations, as well as highlighted importance of developing partnership in defense, education, science, culture, tourism and other spheres. Ministers Nalbandian and Kotzias attached importance to the activities of the Armenian-Greek intergovernmental commission and organization of business forums.

Foreign Ministers touched upon the possible involvement of Greek companies in the free trade zones of Armenia, opportunities for developing cooperation in the Armenia-EU framework, as well as within the context of Greece-Eurasian Economic Union cooperation.

The interlocutors commended the existing solid legal framework between the two countries, which consists of about four dozen documents and can serve as a good basis to further strengthen Armenian-Greek ties. The importance of the working group on expanding the legal framework between Foreign Ministries of Armenia and Greece, the first session of which has already been held in Athens, was highlighted.

Foreign Ministers of Armenia and Greece also stressed the importance of the possibilities for cooperation between the Armenian and Greek diaspora organizations worldwide and highlighted in this context the active involvement of Foreign Ministries of the two countries in exploring the full potential of these ties.

The parties highly appreciated the Armenian-Greek parliamentary cooperation, noting that bilateral visits of parliamentary delegations can serve as an impetus for the dialogue between the parliaments of the two countries, as well as for strengthening the cooperation within the international parliamentary platforms.

During the meeting, Edward Nalbandian presented the agenda and preparatory works of the XVII Summit of the International Organization of La Francophonie to be held in Armenia next year.

The interlocutors also touched upon the issues of assumption by Armenia of the presidency in the BSEC and the deepening of cooperation in the BSEC Parliamentary Assembly.

In the context of signing of the Comprehensive and Enhanced Partnership Agreement the sides discussed the enhancing Armenia - EU relations, exchanged views on launching visa liberalization dialogue.

Urgent regional and international issues were discussed at the meeting, including the Cyprus crisis, and Minister Kotzias presented the latest developments in this regard.

The Armenian Foreign Minister presented to his counterpart the joint efforts of Armenia and the OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chair countries towards peaceful settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. In this context, Greece's Foreign Minister expressed his country's support for the activities of the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs.

The ministers exchanged views on regional and international issues, recent developments in the Middle East, ways of resolving the existing problems.

At the end of the meeting, Edward Nalbandian and Nikos Kotzias signed a Memorandum of understanding on the establishment of a mechanism of consultations between the two Foreign Ministries, which was followed by a joint press conference of ministers.
