Meeting of Foreign Ministers of Armenia and Azerbaijan
23 September, 2019On September 23, a meeting of Zohrab Mnatsakanyan, Foreign Minister of Armenia and Elmar Mammadyarov, Foreign Minister of Azerbaijan was held in New York with the participation of the OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chairs Igor Popov (Russia), Stéphane Visconti (France), Andrew Schofer (USA). Andrzej Kasprzyk, the Personal Representative of the OSCE Chairman-in-Office.
The interlocutors discussed a range of issues related to the Nagorno-Karabakh peace process and assessed the current situation around it. Foreign Minister of Armenia highly appreciated the activities of the OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chairs and the Personal Representative of the OSCE Chairman-in-Office.
During the conversation, the Armenian side attached importance to continued efforts aimed at strengthening the ceasefire and reducing tensions, also through the introduction and strengthening of relevant mechanisms. The need for consistent steps to build an atmosphere of mutual trust was emphasized, including implementation of previously achieved arrangements.
With regards to the citizens of Armenia detained on the territory of Azerbaijan, the Armenian side stressed the need for ensuring their repatriation.
To make progress in peace process, Minister Mnatsakanyan highlighted the importance of ensuring the parity of commitments of the sides, reiterating Armenia's principled position and approaches in the process.
The parties outlined further steps in this direction, including the Co-Chairs’ visit to the region and a regular meeting of Foreign Ministers in the near future.
