Dialogue with the UN Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights

On October 4-5, the 74th session of the UN Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights in Geneva, reviewed the 4th periodic report of the Republic of Armenia on the implementation of the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights.

The Delegation of the Republic of Armenia was led by Vahe Gevorgyan, the Deputy Foreign Minister of Armenia and included the representatives of the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Economy, Labor and Social Affairs, Justice, Education, Science, Sport and Culture, Internal Affairs, and the Prosecutor General's Office.

The attention of the Committee members was drawn to the humanitarian crisis caused by the ethnic cleansing of the population of Nagorno-Karabakh by Azerbaijan.

As was noted, during the last two weeks, Armenia received more than 100,000 refugees forcibly displaced from Nagorno-Karabakh. The members of the Committee expressed their solidarity with Armenia's efforts to overcome the humanitarian crisis, emphasizing the importance of comprehensive international support in this regard.

The members of the Delegation answered numerous questions raised by the Committee experts. The Committee was provided with information on legislative initiatives, as well as on the steps taken in social, economic, cultural, educational and other spheres.

Following the discussion, the Committee will present its Concluding Observations on Armenia.
