On March 21, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Armenia Ararat Mirzoyan, who is in Montevideo on an official visit, had a meeting with Graciela Bianchi Poli, the interim Vice President of the Oriental Republic of Uruguay, the acting president of the General Assembly and the Chamber of Senators.

The meeting was also attended by Jose Luis Satdjian, the Deputy Minister of Health of Uruguay, and Pedro Jisdonian, a member of the Armenian-Uruguayan friendship group in the Parliament of Uruguay.

At the meeting, both sides emphasized the high level of political dialogue between Armenia and Uruguay, one of the best manifestations of which were the recent high-level visits, as well as the opening of resident diplomatic missions in the capitals of both countries. Minister Mirzoyan emphasised that the opening of the embassy in Montevideo is aimed at deepening friendly relations based on sympathy and trust, which Uruguayan partners highly welcomed.

Both sides also stressed the role of parliamentary diplomacy in the continuous strengthening of friendly relations between Armenia and Uruguay.

Minister Mirzoyan expressed his gratitude to the Parliament of Uruguay for taking a principled position on issues of priority for Armenia, including Azerbaijan's attack on the people of Nagorno-Karabakh and the policy of ethnic cleansing in Nagorno-Karabakh.

The historical ties between the peoples of Armenia and Uruguay, which were established after Uruguay as the first country to recognize the Armenian Genocide gave shelter to a large number of Armenians, were touched upon.

At the meeting, the interlocutors also touched upon issues of security and stability in the South Caucasus. Minister Mirzoyan briefed on the latest developments in the normalization process of relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan and Armenia's consistent approaches to key issues, stressing the importance of clear commitment to the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity. Ararat Mirzoyan also touched upon the discussions on the border delimitation process between Armenia and Azerbaijan, for which the legal basis should be the 1991 Alma-Ata Declaration.
