STATEMENT OF THE MINSITRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS OF THE REPUBLIC OF ARMENIA

05 February, 1998

Following recent events in Armenia, certain announcements are being made alleging that there is a danger that military operations will resume in the Nagorno Karabagh conflict zone. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Armenia categorically rejects such unsubstantiated and exploitative statements and expresses serious concern in their regard.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs considers such statements and comments to be deceptive interpretation of recent events which fundamentally obstruct the logical development of the Nagorno Karabagh peace process.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reasserts its commitment to adhere to the May 12, 1994 cease-fire and is firm in its determination to utilize all means to transform the cease-fire into stable and durable peace.

Once again we affirm our unwavering position that the Nagorno Karabagh conflict must be resolved within the framework of the OSCE Minsk process through negotiations.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is convinced that negotiations and dialogue represents the only path towards the establishment of stable peace and mutual trust in the region, and toward the resolution of regional problems.
